Acrylic Landscape original by Kyffin Williams
This cottage on a hillside farm was my choice, before I began as suggested by Rob our
tutor, I watched a video on mixing paints.
In class I mixed blues and yellows, with a little touch of black and white, making a range
of greens .Using A4 paper I did a light sketch of the scene, using a 2B pencil.
Mixing yellow and white for most of the background sky, to this I added a little touch of
black to the paint, for the darker hills and the side of the cottage, the stones and the
path around the farm and front of the cottage.
Using yellow white and black making different shades for the grass In the front of the
scene. I certainly made progress on this one as I almost completed this in class.
I had some nice comments off Rob about the way I have improved this term.
This gave me quite a boost, so all in all I enjoyed this lesson, and the use of acrylics is
getting easier for me. So I will attempt the second part of this acrylic session at home
during the summer break.

Winter scene (original was done by Jane Hunt in oils)
I looked at the artists work on line to get the feel of what she was like.
I did this in acrylics,
Using A3 watercolour paper I sketched the scene mostly concentrating
On the trees, and the snow and ice, just to get the proportions right,
Next the sunlight above the trees, I mixed orange and yellow with a ting of
Red for effect. Moving to the clouds, working as quickly as possible I mixed
blues starting with phthalo adding white for the lighter areas with a small
amount of red for a purple tint, adding more phthalo blue making darker areas.
Then I used a tissue to give it a more blending appearance, using the same
Orange/yellow and white with a tint of red making the colours more suttle
for reflection. Moving on to the more distant trees I used more blue and yellow
making the trees more of a dark green colour adding more yellow to give it
brighter look. The foreground trees I used a blue black mix with thin brush strokes
for the branches giving me something to work around.
Lastly I added the snow with white paint, adding more patches of grass in the
Foreground. On completion of this task my overall thoughts were that the blending of
the sky could have been more subtle. I didn’t get the hazy look of the original.
Over all I enjoyed this task, feeling more confident using A3 paper and mostly got the
Proportions right.

farm yard acrylic
Re-Using tracing paper from the last image, again on an A 3 pad
I sketched the whole scene with pencil, then layer by layer I got the
hang of the exercise. I’m not a fan of acrylics, my problem being
I never seem to mix enough colours to finish a section before it dries out on me. This exercise took me a long time to complete. I do feel as if I got there in the end and I’m happy with the result. The more acrylic I do the more I get to understand the workings of it, Happy days.!!

farm yard in pen and ink
I was encouraged by Rob to progress to an A3 pad, by using the original image and tracing it to a larger scale , it worked out very well. I enjoy using Pen and Ink one of my favourite mediums.
Using hatch markings to give the drawing contours on the mountains and
Fields around the house. Adding as much detail as I could, I found it quite therapeutic. On seeing the completion of the image, I think I should have kept some of the hatch markings small and it would have looked neater.

Farmyard in watercolour and pancil
By Robert Brinley.
I started with a sketch in the style of Peter Cronin, using a pencil drawing on an A 4 Watercolour pad, with a guide of 4 squares. I got the prospective fairly accurate. I added some hatch markings to represent the contours of the mountains and hills behind. I continued with the watercolours ( an improvement for me , (as I usually only have time to get the drawing done in class) I really enjoyed this exercise, mixing the colours are still a mystery to me, but I achieved a good range of colours and somewhere along the way it all came together with a pleasing out come.

Gouache Landscape
This task was enjoyable from the start, begining with a circle drawn around a cereal bowl, I lightly drew in a few trees to get the proportions needed, and to get the angle of the medow in front of the waterfall. Mixing white yellow and blue to make green for the background area, and primary blue and ultra marine for the waterfall. i continued to add greens and a small amount of black.
Taking my time i slowly built up the layers of different shades of greens and yellow on the meadow. I decided the lower area of my painting had too much black, so I went over it with more green. The trees were a bit tricky but i was happy with my effort, adding grass, and pink white and yellow flowers.
My biggest critic my granddaughter said it looked like something from disney, that made me very happy.

Still life Jug
With this exercise in Acrylics, I practised mixing colours using black, white, red, yellow and blue. I still find mixing colours a challenge basicaily because I don't know how much of each colour to add, the instructions are clear enough, and with more practice i will improve.
The next step was to draw the outline of the jug as accurate as possible using brown, I then went on adding darker tones for the background and the shadow of the jug. I used my own mix of all the colours to achieve my idea of the subject. I decided this painting needed somethong to brighten it up, so i added another vase to fill a space. I also added a few lilly of te valley to make it more interesting.

Trees
Using Acrylic A4 paper, and Acrylic paints, mostly white with a touch of black, making a light grey background. I left that to dry. Next came more white to make up the clouds, also a bank of lower clouds. Then adding more layers to the sky. This was left to dry. With a rigger brush the background trees went in next in a pale grey, this was a delicate operation and took some time. With the darker trees I used black and dark grey and went over the leaves, and the foreground with great care and patience. This was a lovely exercise, I really enjoyed it.
jugs/still life
I started with A4 multi media paper, I sketched the subject in pencil, I took time to get as much detail correct as I could, I was happy with the sizes, so I continued with going over the outlines with a fine liner ink pen, remembering to erase the pencil before continuing.
THE background came next with Gouache, I used Cerulean blue, (on reflection felt I should have toned the colour down, and made it paler, or used light Grey).
Next using Yellow Ochre and a little white I went on to the container at the back, then on to the glass using the same colour.
I found the Gouache to be quite thick, so I added a little flow improver that helped. Once this was all dry, I went on to the purple vase, using red with a little black. I invested in some Polychromos coloured pencils, that worked really well adding hatch markings to improve the shapes, and different colours creating shadings, I used this method on the table cloth as well.
This was a pleasant task using different mediums, they worked for me I found it very enjoyable, and was pleased with my effort.
