Gail's Gallery April 2023
Farmyard
With this piece, we were required to complete the same image three times, using a different medium each time, however I only managed to do this one and half of the second! A relatively simple enough sketch for me, which I enjoyed doing. This is done in watercolors but I have chosen to leave the farmhouse in graphite because I like how it looks, as did the tutor. I think I need to work more on making the details look more realistic but I'm quite pleased with this at the moment, considering my commitments.
Cottage in the hills
We had two options for this task and I think most chose to do this one first, as did I. Done in one of my least favourite mediums, acrylics, I really wasn't looking forward to it. But again, sketching out was quite enjoyable with limited details so it was just a case of working out the colours to make the painting look similar to the original task. I took my time and tried to use less paint on the brush to be able to have more control of where I was putting it, and being able to blend a matching colour in to make it look natural. I stepped back to look at the finished piece and was pleasantly surprised. I like how it looks and that's enough for me.
Woodland waterfall
Gouache again, and is completed - although if I were to redo it, I would consider adding more layers, especially in the background. It could also use a bit more detail and if we had more time in the lesson maybe I could achieve that. I really like this and this style, and having watched the the artist responsible for the style, I am rethinking my feelings of the medium. I'd be quite happy to try more of the same.
Brown jug, wine bottle and Brie!
Another medium that I'm not happy using - acrylic! But, perseverance is the name of the game and even though the task only involved the jug, I decided to copy the tutor by putting more items in. I'm happy enough with the result, it looks authentic. However, whilst using both acrylics AND gouache, I desperately feel the need to keep dipping into my water bowl to get a watercolour look! Not easy for me to keep my brush out of it, lol. I do feel that this could do with more layers to enhance it, but it's ok for now.
Blue Jug
I have struggled personally again this term so my work may just reflect that, but I'm trying.
This piece is NOT quite finished yet, but I like how it looks at this stage. This has been done in gouache I believe, and not really liking the medium I have tried to persevere. It IS growing on me however, as I like this. It reminds me of old fashioned illustrative pieces and once I complete it, I'm hoping to retain that look. Enjoyed it, despite my reservations.
