Houses on a hill
"Sahmain - The thinning - of the veil" - Sept 2025
I enjoyed doing the layers and dropping in colours.
And learnt so much about my process and changes I would do if there was next time to repeat this. And learnt to go with the flow and embrace happy accidents.

Landscape after Batty Burnham - Sept 2025
"The Selkie’s Cottage
On the edge of land and water stands the Selkie’s Cottage—a place where the veil between worlds grows thin. Legend tells of selkies, gentle seal-folk, who would shed their skins and walk these shores, longing for both the embrace of the sea and the warmth of a quiet home. This painting channels their spirit of transformation, longing, and belonging—a reminder that we are all called to find our sanctuary, wherever our hearts feel most at home.
Reflection
That’s a wonderful insight,
I began with a pencil sketch, outlined in ink, then erased the pencil with putty rubber. I used wet-in-wet for the sky and background, and mound/hill and layers, dry brushing for texture on the waves, rocks and foliage in the foreground. I especially enjoyed using a rigger brush for the reeds and grass. Overall —this felt therapeutic and was good practice in being more loose and trusting the process. If I did it again, I’d avoid inking the mountain outlines so they’d merge softly into the distance and improve perspective. And more confident now when happy accidents happen like when paint bleeds to places where reference photo hasn't got that detail. I just encoporated and adapted the painting to include them. (mountain shadows, trees in distance, beach etc)

Boat!!
Sept 2025
You said to "make it your own" but you may think it's extreme
so sketched the boat in pencil and another in pen.
Hopefully the shadows in correct place? given there's a way seeker lantern on the one side.
And added mythology person to it. Looks scarier than it is. Charon the fisherman Legend is interesting.

Rose in pastels
Enjoyed doing pastel on Pastelmat. Hope to do more in the future as medium I was introduced to by Rob and enjoy.
Used Inscribe soft pastels. A good range of shades and colours are essential.
The highlights in the rose bud were the trickiest to define.
Added blue background to make the colours pop.

Acrylic after Kyffin Williams
Enjoyed getting messy. And mixing own colours
from limited pallet.
First time ever using pallet knife. Took some practice.
Found pallet knife difficult for small scale . But reverted to a cut up bit of credit /store card for mark marking. I like the sweeping motion and colours on the in right forefront. I need to practice on fluffy distance clouds.
Reworked sea, sky and rock at home.

Landscape after Ron Lawson
Gouache, watercolour, Indian ink, pen & Ink
I enjoyed this style and am coming around to the idea of using gouache as a medium. I really enjoy painting with Indian ink
The scene looks simple but uses several techniques and brushstrokes mediums and mixing of own colours.
And also learnt today that the posts in the Scottish landscape are, so I added a pop of colour using gouache

Ink studies
Enjoyed todays session. So much I did two paintings in class and it was actually nice to complete fully in class for a change and not have half done paintings cluttering the house.
I learnt loads from doing a practice piece in class first. Just wish I used smaller and less expensive paper as test patches. Learnt to use less water and not soak the paper.
The flow of the bamboo and ruler pen and Indian ink aided me to sketch freely and create layers, distance and foliage on trees with the water spray bottle. The water and ink more or less did the hard work for me. Enjoyed the freeness of it.
And subtle hints of watercolour and using a scratching method with cocktail stick for the Christmas tree.

Seascape meadow

Cat and the wondow
Really enjoyed this task.
Tested my drawing skills, Taught me perspective, angles and colour mixing tones, use of negative white space and using scumberling and other techniques and patience to build up layers.
Watercolour ink and wax.
The adult learning class is very local to me and easy accessable. It helps with my welbeing to get out of the house and be social and learn new skills, and keep practicing.
I am growing in self confidence socially and with my self esteem and my art, and getting quicker at tasks set. It gives me a reason to get up and dressed and out the door in the morning. And creating art distracts me from chronic pain and chronic bic fatigue and complex PTSD.

House in the landscape
I enjoyed using pen and ink and watercolour.

Portrait in grey scale
Was interesting task to use limited colour palette. I did struggle with preportions on the portrait. I will revisit this in the future so see the progression. I taught me patience of drying time and layering, and use of negative white space is needed. And when to stop painting for future work.

Cottage
I enjoyed drawing the cottage with minimal colour palette and Ink, it's somewhere I could image my self there. Like a witches cottage.

Winter scene
Winter scene. I enjoyed doing this watercolour. The mark making with the brush strokes of the reeds and grass. Initially the tree was darker which I didn't like personally thought as spoiled the perspective and depth, so I lifted the paint on it. This was one of my first paintings in class.

Lemaur
I found the pen and ink drawing of the Lemaur very therapeutic and got lost in the drawing every pen stroke.

Blue door
I enjoyed using acrylics on canvas board. The colours are vibrant and more forgiving medium to work in.

Landscape
I didn't like using gouche as it's hard to spread and paint with, although it does provide a vibrant pop off colour. But was interesting to have the opportunity to try this medium.
